ABT Texas Summer Intensive
Over the summer, many different summer intensives are available to dancers all over the world. This past summer, I was fortunate enough to be able to go to Austin, Texas for the American Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive there. This was my first summer that I went by myself and stayed in dorms at the intensive. The whole intensive was at The University of Texas at Austin and we stayed at the Moore-Hill Dormitory on Campus. Normally, the Jester Center is the main dormitory for ABT students but it was being renovated this summer. We still ate at the Jester Center at the cafeteria-style places inside.
During this intensive, I took classes from Wes Chapman, Eileen Houghton-Hebron, Roger Van Fleteren, Amy Rose, Susan Brooker, Samantha Shelton, Lisa Slagle, and Rocker Verastique. Informatin about these teachers can be found here: http://www.abt.org/education/summerint_faculty.asp#TEXAS The types of classes included ballet technique, pointe, variations, modern, improv, character, musical theatre, pilates and yoga. We also had a repertory class which was taught by Roger Van Fleteren to our level. There were six levels: Red, Yellow, Orange, Blue, Green, and Violet (in that order, which is frustrating because it is out of rainbow order) I was in the orange level, which was the case for most of the 14 year olds there.
I was so thankful to get the opportunity to go and I'm glad that I get the chance to share my experience. Here are some pictures from my time there.
